Therapeutic ways to incorporate water into your life
There are unbounded situations where our interaction with water inspires personal enrichment for the mind, body and soul. In our hyperconnected reality of 2018, this proves especially important.
While hydration and cleansing are more common uses, water can also be embraced to add a therapeutic element to our lives, whether recharging or seeking a greater connection to our natural environment.
And per usual, it all comes down to personal preference.

Relax near water
Pretty vague, eh? Well, some argue that simply being near water is all it takes for one to thrive.
Wallace J. Nichols, a marine biologist, has studied how our proximity to water can improve performance, increase calmness and diminish unsavory emotions such as stress and anxiety.
“We are beginning to learn that our brains are hardwired to react positively to water and that being near it can calm and connect us, increase innovation and insight, and even heal what’s broken,” Nichols writes in Blue Mind: The Surprising Science That Shows How Being Near, In, On, or Under Water Can Make You Happier, Healthier, More Connected, and Better at What You Do.
By combining neuroscience with personal insight and compelling stories from scientists, athletes and artists, Nichols provides a framework for how water is incorporated into the lives of the successful.
Small instances, like having lunch near a fountain with coworkers, going for a swim at the gym or even listening to the rain as you sleep helps one to experience a calmer existence.
If you have a bit more free time, a day trip or a weekend getaway to the nearest ocean or lake may bring relaxation and calmness, too. Just don’t forget the snacks, sunscreen and music!
Maximize your fitness
For elderly individuals, those with disabilities and pregnant women, exercising does not always seem to be possible, or even the safest activity. And that’s where aqua aerobics comes in, as it’s an intersection of fitness and water where people from diverse backgrounds can come together for comradery.
Taking place in shallow water, typically pools, this workout is diverse and may include aqua yoga, aqua zumba and aqua jog, among other activities and classes. It can be done at home or on vacation.
There are many therapeutic benefits for aqua aerobics, which include reducing the stress on joints, bones and muscles; minimizing the risk of injury; staying cooler in warmer temperatures; and the availability to workout alone or as part of a group. The low intensity is also a perk for participants.
Sweat it out
What’s better than living longer and healthier? Looking good while you’re at it!
A study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, which tracked two thousand Finnish men over the course of a few decades, suggested that regular sauna use gives protection from heart attacks, strokes and other conditions.
While most of the men used the sauna at least once weekly, the study found that those who visited four to seven times per week received the greatest health benefits.
In addition, saunas also flush toxins, assist in weight loss and helps make the immune system stronger.
Keep at it
You don’t need to live on the coast, or the epicenter of a harbor city, to experience the therapeutic benefits of water (although living near water does have varying perks).
One thing to keep in mind is how you start your day. Do you slam back coffee or an energy drink a few minutes after rolling out of bed? No judgement if you do, but remember that sometimes a warm glass of water with lemon may help center yourself for the day ahead.
Also remember that a majority of the human body, as well as the world, is composed of water.
And most likely, that’s not a coincidence.
