Recruiting Top Talent: Meet our Talent Acquisition Manager, Natia

Mitte News

Originally hailing from Georgia, a country famed for its distinctive water, Natia came to Berlin in late 2019 to join Mitte’s People & Culture team.

She has since helped scale Mitte from 30 to over 60 team members in just one year – and we are still growing!

Read on to find out more about Natia’s journey to Mitte, what she looks for in new hires, and her number one tip for nailing a job interview.

You joined Mitte as Talent Acquisition Manager. How did you land this amazing job?

It’s actually a very funny story! I come from Georgia, where clean water has never been an issue for me – everyone in Georgia (myself included) was taking how great our water is for granted. But when I moved to Barcelona, I realised you couldn’t drink the tap water, so I had to buy bottled water. It was heavy to carry and the plastic waste bothered me a lot. I actually decided to count the amount of plastic bottles we used per month and were shocked at how high the numbers were, so we decided to find a cheaper and more sustainable option. That is how I found Mitte. The product and company mission excited me a lot and I decided to regularly check the job openings..

I experienced a very cool recruitment process… and here I am :).

What attracted you to Mitte?

The design of the Mitte machines looked very sophisticated. And definitely the idea of making our environment better than before.

What does a typical day look like for you?

On a typical day at Mitte, I start with a cup of coffee and greet my colleagues :), check my to-do list and then comes the most interesting part of the day –  interviews, meeting with hiring managers, working on Employer Branding activities and generating ideas for a better talent acquisition strategy.

I meet a lot of great people inside and outside the company, talk with the great professionals all over the world who share their experiences with me, and that is why I love my job: I am never bored. This is also the first time I’m working for a hardware company and I am learning a lot of new things from my Mitte colleagues and candidates.

Has the current pandemic affected your working life?

I am very lucky that the current situation does not affect my daily work a lot in the sense that I can still recruit great talents without having to be physically present at the office.

Where are you currently working from and how do you stay connected with the team?

At the beginning of March I decided to visit sunny Barcelona and after a week of my arrival, lockdown had started. So I decided to go back to Georgia for a while to be closer to my family and friends. My plan was to stay there maximum one month but I was stuck there for five! Now I am back in Berlin 🙂

During the pandemic, different social channels help me to stay in touch with my colleagues and have a virtual coffee or beer with them. I am very proud and happy how Mitte helps us to stay connected with different online activities like the digital pub quiz, etc.

What qualities do you look for in new hires?

It may slightly differ according to the position but the qualities that are always important at Mitte are proactiveness, a learning mindset, humility and the ability to help or ask for help.

Do you have a favourite interview question?

Well firstly, questions tend to differ according to the position we are interviewing for. I don’t think I have a favorite question but there is one that I ask every candidate by the end of the interview: “Is there anything you want to share that we have not talked about?” It’s always an interesting one because every person has something different to share, and sometimes it’s not even possible to cover everything during the call.

What’s your number one tip for nailing a job interview?

In my opinion, it is important to be well-prepared for the interview: read about the company, culture, product, be honest and humble. For us, that is a part of the Mitte culture too.

What makes you decide on a candidate?

The initial call with the recruiter is fairly short (around 30-60 min), so it is important for the candidates and myself to be very brief and effective :). After that initial call I use that input to make a decision according to the position requirements and candidate-fit for the role, but if I am concerned, I always have hiring managers’ support to decide together. When we are hiring people at Mitte, candidates meet people from different departments for two reasons: one, to get to know company and team members, and two, to make sure we make the selection together and avoid subjective decision-making. It’s amazing how the team enjoys conducting interviews, and how involved they are in the process – would be tough without them :).

What do you enjoy most about working at Mitte?

The best part about Mitte are my colleagues. They’re very friendly people with diverse backgrounds who are always ready to help, share their experiences and make you feel a part of the big Mitte family.

If you could trade lives with anyone for a day who would it be and why?

Tough question  as I like being me haha :). A few years ago a friend of mine shared an interview with Nicola Tesla called Everything is the light, that was very inspiring and deep. I remember I thought it would be interesting to see the world with his eyes and beyond.
