Sustainability

Every Day is Earth Day

It has been said that “nothing exists alone” in nature.

On April 22, those throughout the world came together for Earth Day , celebrated annually since 1970. The theme this year, “Protect Our Species,” was a reminder to the billions of humans that call this planet home. Like every year, it was a plea for a new mentality.

In a nutshell: changes must be made in order to avoid a global ecosystem collapse.

As unprecedented destruction continues on all continents of the earth, the reduction of plant and wildlife populations is directly linked. According to the Earth Day Network , which coordinates the annual event, many concerns are connected to human activity, such as “climate change, deforestation, habitat loss, trafficking and poaching, unsustainable agriculture, pollution and pesticides.” These, of course, are far reaching and impact us all.

With the focus on the species most at risk, our team created a social campaign to highlight two creatures that could be doomed in the coming years: the sea turtle (nearly all species are considered endangered) and the walrus (noted as vulnerable due to climate change).

With an estimated eight million metric tons of plastic waste entering the ocean every year, these creatures may be living in an ocean that could contain one ton of plastic for every three tons of fish by 2025. And there’s much more to this dilemma than bags and bottles.

As many as 51 trillion pieces of microplastic now circulate in the ocean. These tiny fragments are harming marine life—that not only ingest microplastics but also take them in through their gills. There may be no practical way to clean up ocean plastic on a large scale, but we can prevent more plastic pollution by closing the sources.

At Mitte, it’s our vision to build sustainable and personalized hydration solutions for all.

And as part of this pursuit, we also have additional goals and benchmarks along the way, such as helping to end human dependency on plastic (which has an average decomposition time of 450 years in the ocean) and encouraging further sustainability.

We understand that there is no changing the past. But we also understand that every new day is an opportunity to make the world a little nicer than it was the day before.

As marine animals may be considered “out of sight, out of mind” due to the low interaction with humans and dwindling populations, this served as our campaign inspiration for Earth Day 2019. Just because one can’t see it firsthand does not mean that it’s not happening.

It has also been said that “every day is Earth Day.”

This is something that those in the Mitte community, including our wonderful team in Berlin, take to heart as we lead up to our launch.

If you’re interested in learning more about the topics of water quality, pollution, contamination and climate change, you can read up on some of those topics based on our research below:

Thanks for being part of the Mitte community. We hope you’ll join us for Earth Day 2020.
