What types of contaminants can potentially show up in my tap water?
In many parts of the world, tap water is increasingly contaminated with the following substances:
- Bacteria and viruses
- Drugs and hormones
- Pesticides and herbicides
- Toxic heavy metals
- Volatile organic compounds
This is definitely not an exhaustive list. For more information, read this blog article on Tap water: Do you know what’s in your drinking water?
Why do I need a water purification system at home?
Before tap water is delivered to your house, the public water system treats it in an effort to remove chemicals, particles, and bacteria. They do not always succeed as some contaminants are particularly hard to eliminate, such as pharmaceuticals, BPAs, and hormones.
In addition, even if some substances do get removed by public water treatment systems, this doesn’t mean your water is completely pure, only that the levels of any present contaminants don’t pose any serious, immediate health risk.
Also, the municipal water is only guaranteed until the point of entry to your house, so there are still opportunities for drinking water to be contaminated despite regulations and water quality standards. For instance, if the pipes in your house are contaminated or made of lead, the water that was previously clean will be contaminated again.
Thus, it is best to take your drinking water quality into your own hands so you can know for certain you are drinking safe and healthy water.
How effective is the mitte machine in removing pollutants from tap water and what is the TDS value of the purified water?
mitte uses our proprietary distillation technology that is inspired from the natural water cycle to purify tap water, taking out pollutants in tap water that other purification solutions have difficulty removing.
We remove contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, organic and inorganic compounds, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, hormones, and more.
Used by the World Health Organization as an indication of water quality, we refer to the Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) present in water. It is the total amount of mobile charged ions – minerals, salts or metals – that are dissolved in a given volume of water, expressed as parts per million (ppm). The smaller the TDS value, the purer the water.
To benchmark mitte’s performance, tap water has an average TDS value of 350 ppm while pure, distilled water is at 1ppm. After purification, mitte water has a TDS value of 1 – 3 ppm.
How is mitte different from other water purifiers in the market?
1. Purity of water
Our distillation technology stands out from the crowd because of its high performance and efficiency. We provide water that is 60X cleaner than simple filtration and 5X cleaner than reverse osmosis systems. No parts of the machine allows for contaminants to re-enter the water.
2. Personalized enhancement
Other solutions remove both harmful contaminants and beneficial minerals in water via their “catch-all” purification process, while mitte does not just purify water; we also enhance it with natural minerals that are essential for health. There are different mineral cartridge options available, with varying levels of different minerals that you can pick for your needs and lifestyle.
3. Long-term consistency
Our foolproof machine and fail-safe mechanisms also ensure consistent performance over time. For example, if a membrane in a reverse osmosis system is damaged, the user has no way of knowing about that even though the water quality is impaired. Mitte, on the other hand, constantly monitors the quality of the water that it produces via our built-in sensors. If one part of the machine breaks down, there will be no water output at all to ensure your safety.
4. Smart and connected
The mitte machine is part of a connected ecosystem that can be synced up with our mobile app to further improve user experience by understanding your daily water drinking habits.
5. Energy efficiency
Due to our patented water purification technology, we are also the most energy efficient countertop distiller in the market.
What’s the difference between bottled water and mitte water?
Typically, mineral water contains health benefits in terms of its rich mineral compositions but due to regulations limiting treatment to the water, we cannot be fully certain that it is clean or safe. (In fact, bottled water is less regulated than tap water.)
So by first purifying tap water and enriching it with minerals afterwards, you can be certain that mitte water is both safe and healthy.
How do I personalize the water that is dispensed from the machine?
mitte offers 3 different types of mineral cartridges with varying mineral ingredients and mineralization levels, allowing you to personalize the mineral content of your water based on your lifestyle and needs. They are:
- mitte® Balance – A soft water with a balanced neutral taste and zero sodium, mitte® Balance is an everyday water, perfect for baby food preparation and tea or coffee brewing.
- mitte® Vitality – A crisp drinking water with a high mineral content and complex flavor profile, mitte® Vitality is great for those looking to benefit from essential minerals for improved physical and mental performance.
- mitte® Alkaline – A high-PH water rich in minerals and antioxidants, mitte® Alkaline helps combat acidity and fights free radicals in your body. It also eases recovery after intense physical activities, leading to increased energy levels and better health.
You can also instantly choose the temperature of and quantity of water dispensed, ranging from 8-92°C/ 46-197 °F.
How much healthy mineral water does the mitte machine provide at any time?
Mitte uses our proprietary purification method based on distillation, which removes more contaminants from water than any other methods do, with more consistent performance in the long term. Thus the purification process takes some time; the machine purifies one liter of water in two hours (with a maximum purification rate of 12 liters or about 3 gallons per day).
The purification process is always ongoing (unless your Mitte water tank is full) to ensure a ready supply of healthy drinking water.
Moreover, with smart sensors in the system, the machine and app will remind you to refill the input water tank when needed, so that the purification process can always be carried out as soon as there is space available in the four-liter Mitte water tank.
How much energy does Mitte consume?
Mitte is designed to be very energy efficient.
It consumes on average 0.12kWh while purifying. Since one liter takes 2 hours to be produced, the total energy consumption of the machine for the production of 1l of mitte water is 0.24kWh.
(Please take into account that this is calculated for the typical use case, and that the actual energy consumption can slightly vary depending on your ambient conditions.)
What is the temperature range of water dispensed from the machine?
You can dispense water between 8 to 92 degree Celsius (°C), or 46 to 197 Fahrenheit (°F) instantly, making the water suitable for coffee and tea-making.
What is the difference between the plumbed-in machine and the non-plumbed-in version?
Both versions work exactly the same in terms of purification and vitalization of the pure water.
The only difference is that the plumbed-in machine is constantly connected to your water network so you will not have to refill the mitte® water tank and empty the waste tank over time; these processes happen automatically. You will most likely have to drill a hole into your kitchen countertop to install this version.
On the other hand, installing the non plumbed-in version is more straightforward. You just need to set it upon your counter and plug the machine into a power socket. Simple! You will, however, have to refill tap water and empty waste water manually as and when it’s needed.
How should I clean my mitte machine?
Maintenance includes cleaning the input and storage tanks with a common cleaner that you usually use for your coffee machine. You will be notified by the LEDs on the machine and in the app when it’s time to do so.
Why do I need the mitte app?
The mitte app gives you more functionalities and control over the machine. For example:
- You can set up “Recipes” to customize save the volume and temperature of water so any of them can be dispensed at any time with the push of a button.
- It sends you reminders when the machine needs some kind of maintenance.
- You can set up automatic cartridge ordering, allowing you to receive mineral cartridges based on usage. So you get fresh new cartridges just when you need them, only when you need them.
- You can actively monitor the machine when you are not home and check the water quality in real time, giving you a peace of mind.
- It tracks the amount of water dispensed from the machine, and consequently, the amount of water donated to the developing world via our partner, Water.Org.
Why is the machine connected to the internet?
Connecting the machine to the internet allows you to use extra features offered in the app, such as the automatic ordering of cartridges that ensure you’ll never run out of water, fully customizing water temperature, and tracking your own personal social impact based on usage.
Which mineral cartridge should I choose?
All three mitte® mineral cartridges are designed to give you the best experience with water, and they are all suitable for everyday use.
You should choose a mineral cartridge based on your health, lifestyle, and taste preferences. For example, if you lead an active lifestyle, go for mitte® Vitality, the high mineral cartridge that helps to hydrate and recover electrolytes quickly. And if you have a baby, choose mitte® Balance, the low mineral cartridge for preparing the baby formula, as it is the safest option for babies’ digestive systems. Lastly, if you have an acidic diet and want to combat free radicals in your body, go for mitte® Alkaline.
What minerals in water can contribute to dietary nutrition?
These are some of the top important dietary minerals in the diet and water that are essential for nutrition and wellbeing:
|Mineral||Its functions||Deficiency symptoms||Benefits in water|
|Iron||Iron is necessary for normal body functions such as oxygen transport, metabolism of neurotransmitters, and DNA synthesis.||Impaired mental and motor development and altered behavior.||Significant when dietary intake of iron is low.|
|Zinc||Zinc is required for growth, normal development, DNA synthesis, immunity, and sensory functions.||Growth retardation, delayed sexual and skeletal maturation, and impaired resistance to infections.||Significant when dietary intake of zinc is low.|
|Copper||Copper is responsible for infant growth, host defence mechanisms, bone strength, red and white cell maturation, iron transport and brain development.||Anaemia, neutropenia, and bone abnormalities are the main manifestations of copper deficiency.||Significant for most of the population.|
|Calcium||Besides being the primary structural constituent of the skeleton, calcium is also important for the regulation of enzymes and hormonal responses, blood clotting, nerve transmission, and muscle contraction/ relaxation.||Calcium deficiency leads to a decrease in bone mineral content and mass, leading to increased risk for bone fractures.||Significant for most of the population.|
|Magnesium||Magnesium is essential for the mineralisation and development of the skeleton, and also plays a role in cellular permeability and neuromuscular excitability.||Deficiency of magnesium has been implicated in hypertension and type II diabetes, while low magnesium intake has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.||Significant for most of the population.|
|Sodium||Sodium helps control blood pressure and electrolyte balance, and regulates the function of muscles and nerves.||Cramps, weakness, confusion and seizures.||Minimal, as sodium levels in drinking water are minimal compared with those in the diet.|
|Potassium||Potassium is crucial to heart function and plays a key role in skeletal and smooth muscle contraction, making it important for normal digestive and muscular function.||Muscle weakness, cramping, diarrhoea or vomiting.||Significant when dietary intake of potassium is low.|
How often do I need to replace the mineral cartridge?
The mineral cartridge is good for mineralizing 400 liters (about 105 gallons) of water. Thus the cartridge lifetime depends on how much water your household consumes.
For example, for a small family of 4 dispensing 2 litres of water per person on a daily basis, a mitte® mineral cartridge would last for 50 days (~1.5 months). For a single household with just one person dispensing 2 litres of mitte® water per day, the cartridge will last for 200 days (~6 months).
How do I know when my mineral cartridge’s lifetime is up?
You will be notified by both the LEDs on the machine and the mitte app when your mineral cartridge needs replacement.
How do I buy a new mineral cartridge?
You can activate demand-driven automatic ordering in the mitte app, so we ensure that you will never run out of healthy drinking water. In addition, cartridges can also be purchased individually in our upcoming webstore.
How does this automatic ordering work?
Sensors inside the mitte machine monitor cartridge life so a new one will be delivered to your doorstep via automatic ordering (on the app) just before the current one runs out.
As the automatic ordering process is based on actual usage, you’ll only receive a new cartridge when you actually need it. You can change, pause and cancel it anytime.
Can I purchase mineral cartridges without signing up for automatic ordering?
Yes, you can purchase mineral cartridges individually in our webstore without signing up for automatic ordering.
Why am I automatically donating water to a developing country?
We developed a 1-for-1 clean water guarantee based on our guiding vision of improving life with better water.
Right now, 159 million people in the world are getting water from untreated surface runoff and streams. A further 663 million people lack any access to safe water. With our 1-for-1 guarantee, we want to help change some of these shocking figures and tangibly improve more lives with better water.
We have designed our machine so that it tracks usage and every time you dispense a liter of mitte water, a donation to a water project in developing countries is made. We are making you the promise that for every liter of mitte water you drink, someone in need will get his daily requirement of drinking water too. This happens automatically and is built in. You are not paying any extra money for this project, and no extra action is needed on your part.
Why can I not choose to whom and how much I am donating?
With our NGO partner, Water.Org, we have selected the project that can generate maximum positive social impact, to truly realise the vision of improving lives with better water.
When will you start shipping the mitte machine?
We are moving to mass production stage right now and will be shipping in mid 2018. We are accepting pre-orders on Indiegogo, do check out our project and support us there!
