The ifp Institut für Produktqualität GmbH is an independent laboratory and competence centre for the modern analysis of drinking water, food and pharmaceuticals. The laboratory building was newly built in 2014 and today occupies over 300 employees and offer a wide range of contract analyses for manufacturers, hotels, restaurants and housing associations. In order to guarantee the highest level of analytical reliability at all times, we are accredited as a testing laboratory according to the globally valid ISO 17025 standard and approved by the Berlin State Office for Health and Social Affairs (LaGeSo) as a water laboratory for testing drinking water.

Why should I test my tap water?

Your tap water potentially contains contaminants that are harmful to your health. In Germany, water companies deliver clean water to your house and control its quality. However, it is not ensured that the water coming out of your kitchen tap has the same quality. So, it is recommended to test your tap water regularly (once a year) to make sure there are no pollutants in your water.

What is included in the water test?

Your purchase contains a box of all relevant water testing materials to your door, and also express shipping back to the laboratory. The package includes two water sample bottles and cooling pads. The water analysis consists of 6 parameters: copper, lead, chrome, sodium, nickel and bacteria colonies at 22°C and 36°C incubation temperature.

How does it work?

Conducting a home water test is very simple and doesn’t need much time and effort. After purchasing your water test, our lab partner will send you a package with cooling material and empty water bottles. When you receive the package, you will have to do the following:

1. Freeze the cooling pads overnight
2. Take a water sample in the morning between Monday to Wednesday
3. Put the coolpads and water samples in the package and seal it
4. Attach the express post stamp (included in the package) and bring it to your closest post office with express service
5. You will receive your results after 1 week

Why are these contaminants bad for me?


The element copper is of natural origin. Copper pipes or components containing copper can lead to an increased concentration in drinking water, potentially causing liver and kidney damage to infants and young children.
Threshold value: 2mg/l


Lead is a heavy metal that was used until 1973 for drinking water pipes which are still used in many places today. This is the most common cause of increased lead content in drinking water. Lead is highly toxic to humans, as it can accumulate in the body, even when small amounts are ingested. If lead is deposited in the body, it is excreted very slowly. In this way, it can cause chronic poisoning, which manifests itself in headaches, fatigue, emaciation and defects in blood formation, the nervous system and muscles. These lead poisonings are particularly dangerous for children and pregnant women.
Threshold value: 0,01mg/l


In nature, chromium only occurs in compounds with other elements. Natural spring water contains very small amounts of chromium compounds. Chromium is used, for example, in the manufacture of stainless steels and for alloying, which means that the pipes in drinking water installations may be the cause of increased chromium content in your water. Some chromium compounds can trigger allergic and asthmatic reactions.
Threshold value: 0,05mg/l


Sodium is a natural alkali metal which is mainly known in combination with chloride as common salt. Groundwater is enriched with sodium by the surrounding rock. Sodium is an important element for humans. However, oversupply can lead to health problems such as high blood pressure.
Threshold value: 200mg/l


The heavy metal, nickel, is mainly used for alloys. It usually gets into drinking water through nickel components in the fittings and pipes. Nickel is harmless to humans in small quantities. However, higher concentrations pose a health hazard, causing discomfort and nausea.
Threshold value: 0,02mg/l

Bacteria 22°C & 37°C

The colony numbers at 22 °C and 37°C incubation temperature (not water temperature) give a general overview of the hygienic condition of the extraction point and/or the water supply system. Increased colony numbers often occur after work on the pipe network, in old pipelines or after a longer water service life. Different colonies grow at different temperatures, so the colonies can only be found during the examination at the bespoken temperature points and depending on their characteristics they may or may not be harmful to humans. Our test results indicate the amount of colonies at this temperature which indicates how many colonies exist. If the amount is greater than the recommended threshold then you may want to investigate further or find other drinking water solutions.
